A Future, for America

I asked myself the other day, why America time and time again fails to elect the politicians that America deserves. It is more than a trend for politicians to fail at keeping their promises and subsequently, it’s more than a trend for these politicians to disappoint the very population they promise to represent.

The misleading nature of politics is evident from the word itself. ‘Poli’ is the Latin term for ‘many’ and ‘tics’ we recognize as those infamous, blood-sucking, parasites. Every political party shares the same main purpose, to gain and then to maintain power. Political parties and politicians make whatever promises they need in order to get elected. Voters judge speeches, debates, and campaign promises as if the elected candidate will be held accountable. Meanwhile, when candidates honestly express what they can and cannot accomplish they lose the election to a candidate that promises more.

It’s the majority of voters that continually set themselves (and the nation) for disappointment by electing leaders for their campaign promises and comfort levels. Voters should elect for more stable reasons, such as a candidate’s proven success. If the voting population wants a politician that meets expectations, then they must start electing their politicians differently. They must realize what they want in a politician and judge by those standards. Will they prefer a church going candidate with an attractive family and favorite sports teams, or will they prefer a politician so consumed in their work that they find it impossible to focus on other areas?

In the upcoming election, I hope to see voters elect politicians on records of honesty and accomplishment, instead of the records that they promise to honestly accomplish. I want voters to look beyond the personable qualities of candidates and instead demand politicians with unparalleled logic, education, and even creativity.

As someone who covered government for a local newspaper I can't tell you how many people run for office promising all the things people want to hear only to get elected and find out if all that could be done, it would have been done already. The cautionary tale is to be a little jaded about believing too easily what a candidate says he or she will do.

If all could have been done it would have been done already, I love that point. While I feel that candidates make their promises for the purpose of getting elected, I also have to believe in their good intentions. If they actually could do it all I think that they would (though maybe some of them would only do it all to remain in office). What newspaper?

Good article, the line "‘Poli’ is the Latin term for ‘many’ and ‘tics’ we recognize as those infamous, blood-sucking, parasites." made me LOL!

I think it is time that politicians be put on performance pay, if they don't achieve a certain amount of goals, they don't get paid as much. Maybe even kicked out if a certain percentage of goals aren't achieved in the first 1-2 years.

The problem is there is now way that we can hold them accountable to a higher power. A higher power is the Supreme Court, but they are as corrupt as everybody else. God is the only higher power, but I think he or she is a s fed up as everybody else. Great writing. Thanks for SHARING.
